Why Would You Need a Dental Crown

A crown is used when fillings or other treatments cannot be used to keep the tooth structure protected and strengthen it. In order to restore the tooth to its original size and shape, a crown (cap) is used. It is a covering that encases the entire tooth structure.

Porcelain crowns are the most popular and for a natural and long-lasting smile, porcelain crowns are the best choice. Though there are many other types of crowns as well porcelain crowns are made to match the shape, size, and color or your teeth. Most of the dental restorations are required to be replaced eventually and so does the porcelain crowns although they are highly durable.

Reasons for Dental Crowns:

There are various reasons for getting a dental crown. Some of them are having broken or fractured teeth. If you have not been careful before and have a decayed tooth then that can also be fixed with a dental crown and get your natural smile back. If your tooth has a root canal, fractured fillings or large fillings, a dental crown is the solution. One of the reason also involves cosmetic enhancement.

What Does Getting a Dental Crown Involve?

Dental crowns are custom made so it would require two appointments. In the first sitting, the accurate molds of the teeth would be taken in order to prepare the custom crown. Till the time the crowns are prepared, a temporary crown will be there on the tooth for approximately two weeks. The molds would be used to make the temporary crowns as well.

The mold taken is then sent to the dental laboratory so that they can fabricate the perfect crown according to the tooth structure. The dentist will be preparing the tooth by removing decay if any and would be shaping the surface so that the crown fits properly. This process is done while the tooth is numb and later the temporary crown is placed with temporary cement.

In the second appointment, the temporary crown would be removed and then a new crown will be placed carefully. Spacing and biting would be checked to see if they are accurate. At Capital Dental Clinic, there is nothing to worry and all the information will be provided. Also, regular check-ups will also be done to check the dental crown.
