Preparing for Sedation Dentistry

Depending on what sedation option you receive for your treatment, the preparation needed will be different:

Laughing gas: Let us know about any medications you’re taking or health conditions. No special fasting is required, and in most cases, you can drive yourself home afterward.

Oral sedation: Please follow all instructions carefully. Take your prescribed medication as directed and have a friend or family member drive you home from the appointment. Also, be sure to discuss all medications and health conditions with our team prior to receiving sedation.

How Sedation Dentistry Works

Our sedation options each have a different process for administering:

Laughing gas: A small mask over your nose provides the nitrous oxide. You’ll typically feel the effects within minutes, helping you feel relaxed. The effects quickly wear off once the mask is removed, so you can continue your normal activities soon after.

Oral sedation: About an hour before your procedure, you will take a prescribed medication that helps you relax, cuts down anxiety, and creates drowsiness while still keeping you conscious. After your treatment is complete, you will need a friend or family member to take you home.

FAQ

  • Is sedation dentistry safe?

Yes, absolutely. Sedation is closely monitored and tailored to your health history and comfort level.

  • Can I eat before receiving sedation?

For laughing gas, it’s best to avoid heavy meals beforehand but you can still eat. For oral sedation, you shouldn’t eat or drink for six to eight hours before the procedure.

  • Does insurance cover sedation dentistry?

It depends on your insurance and specific benefits. Please check with your insurance provider to confirm if sedation options are covered in your plan.
